“Fly with” 竟鬧出笑話

有一趟阿祥在美國做訪問,乘的士往機場準備離開該城市。司機友善健談,居然胸中頗多墨水,邊開車邊與我交流深綠哲學心得,講得頭頭是道。

話意正濃之際,他忽然辭鋒一轉,問道:”Who’re you flying with?”阿祥以為自己耳朵有毛病,亦有可能他的口音有隔膜(他是荷蘭移民),更因為他在前座背著我面向前方說話,講了甚麼在後座未必捉摸得準。於是我說”Pardon me?”請他再講一遍;他重覆說:”Who are you flying with?”

我還是不敢肯定,因為內心感到不忿:與君毫無交情,你憑甚麼問我的私事──我約了誰乘飛機與你何干?我客客氣氣說:”Sorry? You mean…?”他倒很有耐性清清楚楚再問:”WHO – are – you – FLYING – WITH?”

至此,車慢了下來,我才忽然開悟,忙著回應:”American Airline!”

接著腦海中浮現出日前在美國電視上看到的一個廣告:”Fly me!”那是一家小型航空公司的老闆粉墨登場一展歌喉,推銷自己的特平產品。原來to fly someone正是光顧某航空公司。

的士司機需要及時知道阿祥乘甚麼班機,因為通常有規模的機場都有多座客運大樓,不同公司的航班會在不同的大樓起飛。當年香港啟德機場只有一棟客運大樓,不管你乘甚麼公司的航班,一律在同一個門口進去辦登機,城中的士司機從來不曾有此一問。此所以阿祥即使浪人在外處處醒目留神,亦不免慢三拍怕搞錯訊息──做自己的傳譯,給自己譯錯了,好瘀。
