多走一步夠膽用心

翻譯過程中可省該省而不省的例子俯拾即是,有一個令阿祥刻骨銘心。

Holidaymakers in almost any foreign country run a risk of getting rabies if they are
bitten by an animal there.
到幾乎所有外地國家度假的人,若被當地的動物咬着,都有患瘋狗症的危險。

這個譯法你看出有甚麼問題?阿祥看了馬上反應強烈,動手大改,可知為何?

事緣1970年代某大出版社將一本英國的急救手冊中譯,在香港發行中文版,聘得筆者做審稿把關,OK了才送去付印。

上述那話就是出自書中旅遊一章。

未看原文,即知不妥。為甚麼是「到幾乎所有外地國家度假……」?

這個譯文明明是「信達雅」俱備,表面上絕對忠於原文(連「意義」)也沒有出錯──其實不然:意義(meaning有兩部分,一是sense(字面意思),一是use(使用效果),此譯文只有前者,後者完全糟糕)。

筆者堅持要改成這樣:

被動物咬着,都可能染上瘋狗症。

理由:原來全英國是從未發生過瘋狗症(狂犬症)的(至少當年如此),所以原著提醒英國人有這麼一回事,在境外要留神,遭動物咬傷後果可大可小。

但是在我們世界這一邊,沒有地方是未聽過無瘋狗症的,人人都早有戒心。如果刊出原譯那一句,即是顯示到「外地」才需要提防,在本地不必,那是嚴重的誤導了。

專業稱職的翻譯,時常要多走一步,靠的是觸覺、經驗、信心、熱誠、責任感、膽色。
